The Perfect At-Home Manicure That Ever Was

If there’s one thing to know about me, it’s that I have an obsession with pretty nails. Back when I was in high school, I learned how to give myself an at-home manicure and I’ve been happily giving myself these little treatments since then.

Quite a few of y’all have asked me for tips on how to give yourself a good manicure, so I’ve put together a little guide!

WHAT YOU NEED:

– Nail cutter
– Cuticle pusher/cutter
– Nail file & buffer stick
– Eyeliner brush or Q-Tips for cleaning
– Round makeup remover pads
– Small bowl with warm water
– Small towel
– Coconut oil
– Nail polish remover
– Your favorite colored polishes

Once you’ve gathered all of your supplies, you’re ready to get started.

FIRST: Use a little coconut oil to soften your nail beds and cuticles.

SECOND: Clip your nails to the size you want them. Use the nail file to shape them to your preference. I personally really love short, round-square nails.

THIRD: Now it’s time to use the cuticle pusher. I like to make sure the cuticles are pushed up really well so that I can easily clip them. (If you look in the picture above, I love using the metal cuticle pusher to get the extra skin to the sides and then using the pink cuticle pusher to clean them up.)

FOURTH: Dip your hands into the warm water to get the oil off of your fingers and  then wipe them on your towel to dry. Now use the buffer stick over all of your nails to make sure you’ve evened out your nail bed surface. Once you’ve buffed each nail, dip your fingers back into the water once more and then wipe off on the towel again.

FIVE: Now the fun part! If you’re using the Formula X system, use the nail cleaner to make sure there is no residual gunk left on your nails. Otherwise, use nail polish remover on a cotton pad to clean your nails.

SIX: Apply one coat of the base coat on all your fingers. Using the color you’ve picked out, apply one thin layer to each of your fingers. [TIP: for the best application, start in the middle of the nail with your color. Push the brush slowly down so that the polish covers the bottom of your nail first. Then slowly swipe up and to the sides to cover the whole nail.] After the first light layer, go back and do another light coat to ensure that your polish is opaque.

SEVEN: Using a small eyeliner brush or a q-tip, go around the edges of your nail to clean up any of the extra color that might’ve gotten onto your cuticles. Now use your top coat to seal the color. Don’t forget to swipe the top coat along the top edge of your nail to seal in the color.

Once all my nails have fully dried, I like to use a little bit more coco oil to moisturize my hands!

Just a note: I personally love the Formula X system as it comes with everything you need. Although I use their top coat often, I do prefer the Essie Gel Setter top coat as it sets the color nicely, helps prolong my manicure, and dries in approximately 5 minutes.

Now that you’re armed with all my tips & tricks, you’re finally ready to run off & do your nails! Be sure to share your new manicures with me on Instagram (@thatgirlmyra_) using the hashtag #TGMNailClub
