As Amir and I were getting packed up for our trip over to Amsterdam, one of the things we had to do was figure out what stuff we wanted to bring along for our extremely long flight over. From Manila, we traveled about 3.5 hours to Singapore, then after a 3 hour layover, we had another 13.5ish hour flight before we finally made it to our new home. Yup, long freakin’ flight!
Luckily for us, we have done this kind of long overseas haul a few times before, so packing up our carry on items was a breeze! Today, I wanted to share 5 of my top picks that I think should always be with you when you’re about to embark on a long journey!
I was never a big lover of eyemasks, but the more I take long flights, the more I realize these babies are the BEST thing ever. Inevitably when you’re on your flight, someone around you will decide that they need to have their reading light on (even while the whole plane is sleeping & the lights are off). Insert the eyemask which can easily be slipped on and provide you with a calming darkness so you can continue to snooze without being annoyingly disturbed by the person who has to go against the grain 😉 I usually just ask the flight attendants if they have an extra one and they are pretty good about it! If you wanted to splurge and buy yourself a nice set though, I think the satin textured eyemasks are so cozy!
iPad / Tablet / Reader:
When I was younger, I would always always always spend a majority of my plane time watching movies. Over the last couple of years, I’ve noticed that I’ll while I might watch one or two movies, I much prefer kicking back with a good book and being swept away into my imagination. This is where the iPad for me has been the greatest thing. I usually load 3-4 books on there — a couple of funny, easy reads, maybe one dark, twisty book, and usually one supernatural styled book — to give myself some options. I have definitely been that person who is on the flight with one hand clamped around her mouth for fear of laughing out loud because I read something hilarious, haha!
This is a big one for me. When I take long flights, my outfits usually consist of leggings, a tunic and maybe a light cardigan so that I can layer if I need to. Since I tend to get cold quickly, I started also carrying a scarf on the plane with me and man, what a good idea that was. I have used the scarf as a blanket if the airline didn’t have one available, as a way to cover my face if I forgot my eyemask, as extra padding between me & my seat, and occassionally, I have been known to share it with Amir when he wears shorts on the flight and then gets cold, lol.
I personally love the Lululemon Vinyasa scarf because it is lightweight but heavy enough to keep me warm, but really, any warm scarf can do the trick.
I love wearing easy shoes on the plane. I usually bring along a pair of socks to keep my piggies warm when I’m just sitting in my seat, but whenever I have to get up to use the restroom or take a little walk up and down the airplane to get my circulation working again, I love that I don’t have to spend time wrestling with laces or buckles from sneakers or sandals.
I also have a tendency for my feet to swell when I take plane flights, especially now during pregnancy, and I love that slip-on shoes have some extra give so my feet don’t feel suffocated and painful when it is time for me to put my shoes on.
For my birthday a couple of years ago, Amir got me some Beats headphones which I quickly became obsessed with. You guys, trust me on this…a good pair of headphones is definitely something you want to invest in for your flights. I slip these guys on right as I get onto the plane and crank up my tunes and it’s a recipe for immediate relaxation. I love that they are over the ears and that they help block out noise so that even if I want to fall asleep, I can easily do so without being woken up by every little movement or creak from those around me.
I also love that the Beats come with their own pouch so I can keep the headphones and the wire wrapped up nicely together and they easily fit into my bag!
Do y’all have any favorite travel items that you have to have with you whenever you jet off?
